Introducing Yam Fries Recipe

Yam fries are a delicious and healthier alternative to traditional potato fries. With their natural sweetness, vibrant colour, and satisfying texture, yam fries are a popular side or snack that can be easily prepared at home.

Here’s an extensive recipe to help you make perfect yam fries every time.

Equipment Needed

Here is a list of equipment you’ll typically need to make yam fries:

  • Sharp knife
  • Cutting board
  • Vegetable peeler (optional, if you want to peel the yams)
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet or tray
  • Parchment paper or aluminium foil (optional, for lining the baking sheet)
  • Oven (or air fryer, if you prefer)
  • Spatula or tongs (for flipping the fries)

Ingredients

  • 2 large yams (also known as sweet potatoes)
  • 2–3 tablespoons olive oil (or another preferred oil)
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional, for smokiness)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot powder (for extra crispiness)

Optional Garnishes

  • Fresh chopped parsley
  • Grated parmesan cheese
  • Dipping sauces: garlic aioli, ketchup, chipotle mayo, or ranch

Preparation Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). A hot oven is key to making crispy yam fries.

Step 2: Prepare the Yams

  • Wash and peel the yams thoroughly.
  • Cut the yams into even-sized sticks, about 1/4–1/2 inch thick. Try to keep the fries uniform so they cook evenly.

Step 3: Soak the Fries (Optional but Recommended)

  • Place the cut yam fries in a bowl of cold water and soak for at least 30 minutes. This step removes excess starch, helping the fries become crispier.
  • Drain and pat the fries dry with a clean towel. Removing moisture is crucial for crispiness.

Step 4: Season the Fries

  • Place the dried yam fries in a large bowl.
  • Sprinkle the cornstarch or arrowroot powder over the fries and toss to coat. This helps create a crispy exterior.
  • Drizzle with olive oil and toss again to ensure all pieces are coated.
  • Add salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Toss to distribute the seasoning evenly.

Step 5: Arrange on Baking Sheet

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  • Spread the fries in a single layer, ensuring they don’t touch or overlap each other. Overcrowding will make them steam instead of being crisp.

Step 6: Bake

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  • Remove and flip each fry for even browning.
  • Return to the oven for an additional 10–15 minutes, or until golden and crispy on the edges.
  • Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes to prevent burning.

Step 7: Serve

  • Remove from the oven and allow the fries to cool for a couple of minutes. They will crisp up further as they cool.
  • Add more salt to taste if desired.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley or parmesan cheese, if you like.
  • Enjoy your yam fries with ketchup, garlic aioli, or your favourite dipping sauce.

Tips for the Best Yam Fries

  • Uniform Size: Cut fries evenly for consistent cooking.
  • Don’t Skip Soaking: Soaking removes starch and boosts crispiness.
  • Cornstarch Magic: This is the secret to a crunchy texture.
  • Single Layer: Overcrowding leads to soggy fries; use two baking sheets if needed.
  • High Heat: A hot oven is necessary for caramelisation and crispness.
  • Experiment with Spices: Try cumin, chilli powder, or curry powder for different flavours.

Air Fryer Variation

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Cook fries in batches for 12–15 minutes, shaking halfway through.
  • No need to flip individually, but don’t overcrowd.
